This
ten-day class combines Ocean Sailing and Advanced Navigation with
an Offshore Night Passage.
The
combined sailing course was designed to fill the needs expressed
by our students. Many students come to us wanting a night sail
and the offshore experience, but were lacking sailing experience
and background. Consequently, we built a course in which for five
days we focus on sailing, seamanship,
navigation and safety offshore and followed the second
five days by a night offshore passage.
The first
five day portion is conducted while sailing the Maine coast from
Portland to the Mt. Desert region. The second five days takes
us offshore across the Bay of Fundy to Nova Scotia and finally
a night passage from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia back to Portland a
distance of 200 miles. The five days of controlled sailing along
the Maine Coast is to prepare the participant for the rigorous
sail across the Bay of Fundy to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and return.
The
passage to Nova Scotia provides a controlled introduction to offshore
night sailing. Without a doubt the Offshore Passage will give the
participant a clear picture of the rigors and demands of offshore
sailing and night passage making.
We
take great care in planning the offshore trip. The safety of the
vessel, participants, and crew are our first priority and the instruction
of safety is high on the list of learning objectives. Participants
will operate in two person watch teams and will stand 4-hour watches
under the 24-hour operational schedule.
You
must bring your passport as we need to clear customs in Yarmouth,
Nova Scotia and again in Portland.
